Are there more Gods than one?
A: There is but One only, the living and true God.
1 look at the question and answer
2 look at the essential unity or one-ness of God
3 Some applications
Vincent: Q. 1. Why is God said to be one only?
A. In opposition to many gods. “Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord.”— Deut.4:4. “We know that there is none other God but one. For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth (as there be gods many, and lords many), but to us there is but one God.”— 1 Cor. 8:4-6.
Vincent: Q. 2. Why is God said to be the living God?
A. In opposition to dead idols. “Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands. They have mouths, but they speak not; eyes have they, but they see not; they have ears, but they hear not;’ &c.— Ps. 115:4-6. “Ye turned from idols, to serve the living God.”— 1 Thess. 1:9.
Vincent: Q. 3. Why is God said to be the true God?
A. In opposition to all false gods. “The Lord is the true God. The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens. They are vanity, and the work of errors.” — Jer. 10:11, 15.
Absolute and supreme
Eph4:6 ‘One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.’
1. One 1st Cause
2. There can only be One Infinite
1 Tim 6:16 ‘Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.’
Jer23:24 ‘Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD.’
3. One Omnipotent
Use1: One Lord, one faith, one baptism Eph4:5, absurd therefore to say we may be saved in any religion. This then is the one God to please. We need not esoteric knowledge of ‘local’ gods,
Use One: Watson asks, what is it to please God?
Happy subject, in seeking to please someone, pleasure is aroused in our own hearts. Imagine a father discovering that his children were talking about how they might please him, or a boss taking the same subject?!, yet ‘Without Faith it is impossible to please God’.
1.Comply with His will
2.Finish his work: duty to God and man in the 10 commandments Ex20
3.Give him our best like Abel: “And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering” Gen 4:4
4.Pray only to Him. i.e. not to the saints – Is63:16 Abraham knows us not.
Nor Angels “Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, And not holding the Head, from which all the body by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of God.Col 2:18,19
5.Love Him above all Ps73:25
Use 2: We need to guard our hearts against setting up other Gods
2 Tim 3:4 lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God (e.g. Sunday obervance)
1 Jn 2:16 the godless trinity, ‘lust of the flesh, lust of the eye and the pride of life’
Use 3 is about those who renounce the true God, seeking out ‘other ways’.
Use 4: ‘That they may be one’ John 17:21
In judgement, affection,
Use 5: of Gratitude
Henotheism (one god at a time) e.g. in classic Greek mythology
Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods? John 10:34
I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High. Ps82:6
Jesus is a created lower ranking god than the father. Men are called “gods” in Ps 82:6; Jn 10:33 in exactly the same way Moses was made “as God” to pharaoh in Ex 4:16; 7:1. God does call the wicked judges “gods”, but that should be directly compared to Ex 4:16; 7:1, where Moses was made “as God”, not called Gods. So calling the wicked judges gods in Ps 82:6, means they were made to represent God Almighty, not that they were really gods at all. According to the logic of Jehovah’s Witnesses, since human judges that were commissioned by God, can be called “gods”, so also can Jesus be called a “god”. http://www.bible.ca/trinity/trinity-definition-god-watchtower-JW-henotheism.htm
